Crazy Eddie Murphy Sample Source

Big shout to DJ JUST-1 for showing me this. It's one of those crazy moments in sampling history.
You all know Kool G Rap's 'It's A Demo', right? Hmmm, where does that intro come from?

I've been watching Eddie Murphy's Delirious stand-up show on and off for damn near 25 years yet I NEVER realised this!

Sounds familiar, right? Now check THIS out.......!!

4 Pillars Launch Gig - Upcoming

My man Lovegrove (see also this previous post) of Style Warrior has designed the flyer for an upcoming hip hop gig in London.

4 Pillars is the name, bringing together the original 4 elements of hip hop - and no, I refuse to acknowledge that 'beatboxing' is a fifth or even 'knowledge' as yet another (sorry Bambaataa, we need some quality control, old son).

The following is from the official Facebook Event Page:

'Bits, Bits, Doo-Dads Here And There'
"The 4 Pillars are the foundation of Hip Hop; each pillar represents one of the following:

Aerosol Art, MC’s, DJ’s and last but by no means least, B-Boys.

Many people claim to be involved in Hip Hop but only seem to represent one or two of the 4 pillars. Hip Hop cultur...e is EVERYWHERE and has touched EVERY genre of music. If the truth be told, Hip Hop is more than a culture; it’s a way of life and what we aim to bring to you at the 4 Pillars party is a night of pure Hip Hop in its true essence, whether you’re from the old school or the new school, we are one and all are welcome.
"

'You Do Doodle On The Paper'
In attendance are some very rarely-seen stalwarts of the early UK scene such as Kamanchi Sly of Hijack, DJ's Renegade & Mada as well as Son Of Noise, MCM of Caveman.

The legendary writer MODE2 of The Chrome Angelz (TCA) will be creating aerosol art alongside  Airheads, Hatch and Jaz. It will be auctioned at a later date and the proceeds will be donated to The Prince’s Foundation for Children and The Arts.
Mr LG will also be selling some of his own artwork (see the pics on the right-hand side for examples of his canvas work) on the night. He has a wicked sense of humour which is evidenced in his work with no small love of classic hip hop movie history

There will also be live B-Boying from the Soul Mavericks on the night, too.

The date for this initial launch jam is June 22nd 2012 and will be held at the Underdog Gallery, Cricifix Lane, London SE1 3JW.

Cold Cold Cash

I recently picked up one of these on eBay for just a smidge over a finski. The only way of carrying your ends for any self-respecting b-boy!
Yes, I'm a sucker for any Wild Style merch and would probably spend my last penny on a WS-branded teabag or something.

There's still a few left.

LG will be laying down a 45-minute mix of old school UK classics on DJ Step One's ‘Infinite Hip Hop’ show this Saturday 19th May, on Kane FM.
The show runs from 6-8pm and you can catch it live on 103.7fm (if you're within 20 miles radius of Guildford) or check out the stream on www.KaneFM.com http://www.kanefm.com/MediaPlayer/

Darlene...mmmmmm.....

You must ALL remember Darlene Ortiz. She was Ice T's partner and was immortalised on the cover of his second album, Power back in 1988. And also featured on the rear.....

Here is the proof that she's stil smokin' some 20 years later.
Bow-chikka-wow-wow.

Gone Too Early

'MCA' PIECE COURTESY OF AROE

It's Sunday night. I'm having a quiet moment contemplating the loss of MCA. It's been a week and yet it still hasn't fully sunk in yet.
I've been listening to a few Beastie Boys tracks over this time and thinking about the whole situation.

I was a fan since 1986 and loved them straight away. The tabloids tried to dismiss them whilst other jealous types snidely wrote them off just because of their colour. Of course they were wild and boisterous when they first came out because they were young, they were in the worldwide spotlight and they were given free booze!

Anyway, like I say, I've been having a think and realised just in the last 10 years or so we've lost many great people who've been taken from us before their time.

R.I.P. to the following.

Michael Jackson
John Hughes
Brittany Murphy
DJ AM
Farrah Fawcett
Guru aka Keith Elam
Patrick Swayze
Gary Coleman
Corey Haim
Ryan Dunn
David Carradine
Nate Dogg
Aaliyah
Whitney Houston
Florence 'Flo-Jo' Griffith-Joyner
Heavy D
Tupac
Biggie Smalls
Steve Irwin
Amy Winehouse

No Half Steppin Jam - May 2012

Sorry for inundating you with this, the third post in a day but I've been a bit slack in updating the blog as of late.

This coming weekend is the return of the brilliant No Half Steppin' night from Sure Shot Productions. It takes place as always downstairs at The Rumsey Wells pub in Norwich and kicks off at 8pm.
This month has resident dj JUST-1 with special guests ILLINSPIRED aka Billy Illa on the decks and taking time off the mic - although I can't see him leaving it alone ;-) - and also REPO 136 will be on the wheels of steel, too.

It's always a great evening of proper hip hop and funk with none of that "handbag hip hop" (® DJ Just-1) with plenty of classic joints and maybe a smattering of some "80's techno" (® chubby emo/hipster bint) otherwise known as Electro-funk.

It's free entry as always so drop in, you're all very welcome.

Vision On.... continued

I recently had another entry for the ABU! Gallery. This time from young Ramses.

At first glance it would appear that the artist has assigned the talents of a youngster to perform the illustration. Either that or stuck a pen up his nose and moved his head erratically.

Now, what strikes one immediately is the bold and rather striking Ageing B-Boys Unite logo at the head of the page. Note the 'face' in place of the dot for the letter 'i' and also the fact that the end letter is missing. The depicted 'face' could almost be a latent 'Smiley Face' from the late 1980's with it's repetive form of music known to the youth as 'Acieeed House' music. Add to this the fact that he has quite literally 'dropped an e' (from the aforementioned word) and one may summarise that the artist was a former abuser of recreational drugs. The finished article, I speculate, is the artist wanting the world to know his seedy past but perhaps only cryptically.

Moving on, I am especially enthralled by the subversive manner in which the artist has called upon the seething war between two of the largest sports companies that provide the hip hop scholar with their beloved pumps. In one fell movement he has forced the viewer into the problematic and thorny issue of deciding which of the two camps are indeed the footwear of kings?

Connected to the shoes is the main character who here, is holding a piece of vinyl with the stereo stylus still attached. What this is saying to me is simple. The deejay will provide music however and wherever - regardless of whether the stereophonic equipment is self-contained or not. Genius!

I am responding with a generous degree of belly-laughs as I read the caption "REPPO 1936" as it alludes to a particular favourite artist of mine from the 'gangsta rap' fraternity, namely Boogie Down Productions. The artist has taken to heart the adage 'The P Is Free' and decided to help himself to an extra letter JUST BECAUSE HE CAN! This audacity only excels the fact that Ramses is surely not to be messed with as his views certainly aren't that of the average b-boy and in fact is keen to unsettle the viewer in a way the beloved Banksy can only dream of.

Bravo, sir.

Beastie Boys Raising Hell In London Video

I saw this video (on the Tim Westwood Youtube channel) and had to share it.

It's handheld camera-shot footage taken from the 1986 Raising Hell Tour of which Run DMC and LL Cool J were part of.
You can feel the raw energy of the night with the Beastie Boys going wild onstage and the whistle posse being in FULL effect!
Check out MCA's crowd-diving moment and the reaction of the guy wearing the UK Fresh t-shirt. Def Jam honcho, Lyor Cohen looks to square up to him and diffuse the situation before it blows up.

Also in attendance is the ever-youthful LL as well as a happy Russell Simmons.

Adam 'MCA' Yauch

R.I.P. Adam 'MCA' Yauch 1964 - 2012

This sad news is just filtering through at the moment.
So sad. So wrong. So unnecessary.

Peace.

ABU.... Vision On Stylee

You may wish to open this page up in another tab whilst you peruse the ABU! Gallery.

This nice, retro design is courtesy of the man like J-MC of the DCP Posse
Note the richness of his composition, urging the viewer to stop for a while and delve deep into one's past, searching long-lost thoughts of a simpler time. It conjures up a swelling feeling of euphoria in which two worlds collide; that of Spectrum 48k lo-fi design and Lego bricks.
The feeling of claustrophobia is especially prevalent with the deep, thick border that encases the piece which I suspect is this artists' own metaphor for the hipsters that swarm around and engulf ageing b-boys at hip hop events.

This next entry is from the notebook of a Mr Hayhooooooe.
He has decided to opt for the age-old stylings of paper and pen. Yes, very outlandish I agree but still manages to capture a robust yet fragile feeling of fleeting rhythm with the curvature of it's lettering.
I am especially in awe of the cheeky confines of the latter part of the design with an arrogance displayed in the numbering, forcing the viewer to intake a deep breath, practically feigning a uncontrollable brevity in which the end comes almost too soon. Ah, such is life. I applaud you, Hayhooooe, ho, ho. Bravo.

And this is from me, innit.

Think you can do any better? Come on readers, have YOU got a talent for pen and ink or are a digital enthusiast? Then send something in and who knows, YOU might make it onto the hallowed pages of ABU!
We welcome all entries but sadly they cannot be returned to you.

ABU April Show Intro......REVEALED!

As no one successfully guessed the music I used in last month's ABU Show intro, then here it is.

Saboteur was a classic game from 1985 and came out on the Spectrum and C64. I was dyed-in-the-wool Speccy-head so this was the only version I either knew or cared about.

Containing minimalist audio (read: none) save for the occasional crunching of fists, feet or shurikens, the gaming experience was heightened purely because of this. Darting your head towards the smallest whisper of noise as you made your way up and down ladders.

And there was a sequel; Saboteur 2, in which the protagonist was a slinky female ninja if I remember correctly.

The software house that produced this - Durell Software - were also responsible for a wealth of many other games, not least of all, Turbo Esprit (1986), a driving game which was another big favourite of mine.

Ahhh, happy days!
