LL Cool J - Live At Maine 1985

Have a look at this great piece of hip hop history. It's LL Cool J rocking a school hall just a few months prior to his RADIO album being dropped on Def Jam.
Make it past the awful scratch antics of Cut Creator and you'll be rewarded with the ever-confident vocal delivery and showmanship of a young, 17-year old James Todd Smith.
Check out his human beatbox. Why did he never exhibit this on record?!

Thanks to JUST-1 for finding this.

No Disco Scratch Tonight 24/01/2013

There will be no show tonight on Disco Scratch Radio. However Waxer is planning to have audio playing whenever you land on the DS website so still go to the chat and we'll have something to listen to even if it isn't the usual show.

Still unsure about next week's ABU Takeover. Will keep you posted as I have a couple of avenues I can go down.

Groove Records Tees - REPRINT

Those lovely folks at Style Warrior are producing a reprint of the famed Groove Records t-shirt that was on limited sale last year.
This time however there will be more choice. Various colours, sizes as well as the actual garment weight mean than you can just about customise your gear to how you want. And with the heavy snow battering down our doors you can also order this design as a frost-scaring hoody - practical as well as dope.

On a personal note, I only visited Groove a handful of times until it closed down and was pretty late to this particular party. The way I see it is that at least I actually was able to be a small part of this great piece of UK hip hop history.
One of the earliest times I went would've been around the time the BBC showed that legendary Westwood doc, Bad Meaning Good and I remember a small clip of the shop in the programme and thinking 'I've been there!'.
I bought a Grandmixer Dst 12" as well as the red bootleg (RPM Records) of Steinski's Lessons from there. And who remember's the printed list of the Ultimate Breaks and Beats album artists stuck on the front counter? I always tried to memorize as many as I could as they were my holy grail!

I've since put up pictures of what Groove Records has now become and it's pretty sad.

You have until Sunday February 17th to pre-order as this, like all Style Warrior goods, is a limited edition.
Check the website for full details and ordering options.

Egyptian Lover making 'Egypt, Egypt'

This is a great little video of The Egyptian Lover in his studio showing us how he made his 1984 track, 'Egypt, Egypt'.
He talks us through the recognisable riff explaining that that was his attempt at a Planet Rock-esque synth line. But wait until he brings out the TR-808. Now I've got sound 808 files that I can throw into Logic and create the same beats but nothing can compare to the actual machine blasting out those rhythms.
A brief but very entertaining video.
Props go to Tommy over at Miscreant Productions as he posted this up the other day. And as he states, "File this under MUST WATCH", indeed.

Key Tracks: Egyptian Lover "Egypt, Egypt" from Red Bull Music Academy on Vimeo.
Key Tracks is a new series presented by Red Bull Music Academy in which musical mavericks walk us through the making of their signature tunes. For this debut edition, we speak to the the king of the West Coast electro sound, Egyptian Lover, as he shows us the backstory – and the 808 beat – behind his 1984 classic "Egypt, Egypt".
