Hip Hop Connection Magazine - Issues 21, 22 & 23

Here's three more scans of Hip Hop Connection mags to bring 1990 to a conclusion.

Issue #21, October 1990

Derek B talks about his acceptance within the UK scene and his upcoming second album (that never was) and LL Cool J is interviewed about Mama Said Knock You Out whilst filming with Michael J Fox on the film, The Hard Way. There's a great piece on the then-launch of London's KISS FM radio station back when it was one of the most upfront and must-hear stations in the UK.
The JBeez talk through their second album, Done By The Forces of Nature which now that I think about it deserves another listen as I never really felt that happy about it at the time (and don't even get me started on J. Beez Wit The Remedy...).
There's an interesting British group in the Demo Blaster section before they became mildly famous when they were picked up by Music of Life records.

Issue #22, November 1990

This issue kicks off with a piece on SNAP! (the guys who did 'The Power'). It's only a one-page thing but worth a read even to see how anti-gay remarks were still around and not as politically-correct as that kind of caper is these days. The Gang Starr interview must be the first one with HHC and was done just before Step In The Arena dropped. Nice to see how Jazz Thing came about which was mostly down to Spike Lee getting on the blower to Branford Marsalis and telling him to find them!
Also look out for articles on D-Nice, Gilles Peterson, X Clan explaining the Blackwatch Movement as well as The She-Rockers fuming about their new album. Oh, and remember the Technics Twins? No, me neither.

Issue #23, December 1990

By now HHC seems to be subtly changing its format with new features and overall design aesthetic and it really shows - although there are some very typical 80s page designs more noticeable with hindsight.
There's plenty of tidbits of news as well as features on The Outlaw Posse (and their anger at a certain CJ Mackintosh remix), Black Radical MKII (he was once sent a cease & desist letter from beer merchants, Bass Ale), and a heavy read with Professor Griff (no surprise there). 1990 saw the return of Run DMC, and they speak about their new album 'Back From Hell'. The Demo Blaster section features MC Dee2 - who I'm pretty sure is the same Dee II who was later signed to Kold Sweat. N.b. I think the mag inadvertently switched Dee's photo with Run DMC's from a few pages back. I suppose that I could've corrected them with some Photoshop magic but, meh, I ain't on that George Lucas 'special edition' shizzle so left it as it was. I'm sure you can live with that.
And after blabbering his way through a recent issue of HHC, KRS One is back yet again and talking about the HEAL project, and London Posse break down their debut (and only) album, Gangster Chronicle.

Happy reading,
Repo
