71 ABU Show Feb 2019

Woop, woop! Ring the alarm. It's the first post of 2019 and it's only February.

No one reads these posts anyway, do they?
Anyway, just in case you do then I'm letting you know that I've done a podcast and it's going out on Disco Scratch Radio on Thursday at 9pm.
There will be a link to listen in afterwards (I'll do a separate post, yes, TWO posts in ONE week!) in case you miss it. However, to hear it tomorrow then go here:
http://discoscratch.co.uk/radio/

Also, go here for the Discord chatroom which is where all ageing b-boys hang out:
https://discordapp.com/channels/240597410324283393/240597410324283393

I'm quite proud of this one. There's a load of good music - a mix of new and old hip-hop, electro, funk and eclectic stuff, too. There's also a really good mix by Simon Cannon of various funk and rap 45s all blended together in a steaming pot of audio soup.

Lastly, why aren't you on Facebook? That's where ABU is these days, sadly. Yep. We sold our soul to the corporation which is why the blog is so sparse. I wish it was a different story but that's just the way it is.
Go on. Fuel the fire and add to the further demise of the ABU blog by going to https://www.facebook.com/groups/ageingbboysunite/

Pip, pip!

DIG Mag Issue 2 Review

Issue 2 of DIG magazine landed through my door recently and I was really anticipating it's release.
Not much has changed since the first issue which is a good thing as it already contains the perfect format - great design, easy to read, simple facts AND a lovely soundtrack to accompany it.

If you're lucky, for £3.50 you can own this brilliant little mag (no bigger than the size of a CD booklet) - I say that as stocks of the launch issue were flying off the shelves and 3rd print had to be produced to satisfy demand.

This is a great way to discover new (old) music from people who love to go looking for obscure records in all manner of places from all over the world. If you consider yourself a 'digger' then this read should be right up your alley.
Here's a list of contributors to issue 2:

Contributors in this issue include:

A Cat Called Fritz
DJ Baila
DJ Supreme La Rock
Doublepeas
ExP
Jonny Trunk
Jorun Bombay
Mr. Brown
Good Life
Oxygen
Richard Wilson
Ski Oakenfull
Sven Atterton

If you fancy writing about a particular song you've ever found then let the DIG peeps know and you can be featured, too.

Digging 4 Victory Podcast 34 – June 2018

Just a quick heads-up to let you know that the latest Digging 4 Victory podcast is now up and ready.
Two hours of the classiest tunes around all put together by LG (ex-Style Warrior) and there are some absolute crackers this month.
Laid back jazz-funk, retro synthwave, freshly-made funk covers of classic hip-hop plus....classic hip-hop.
With the weather being so bloomin' good to us recently (have we beaten 1976 yet?) D4V is the perfect accompaniment to this heatwave.

ALSO... incoming review of LG's sister project DIG magazine very soon.

ABU #65 Teaser Trailer & Flyer

So it's been a while since we at ABU hit you up with a podcast. With this in mind the cogs began turning in the collective ABU creative machine and before you know it - BAMM! - Podcast #65 is just about ready to roll.

Actually the truth is that I have been putting it together since the beginning of the year but very slowly.
At this point I'm unsure as to either broadcast it (it's a pre-record) next Thursday at 9pm via Mixlr - remember Disco Scratch and their servers are now no longer around - or otherwise upload it to the usual spot - hearthis.
I shall proceed to do a test broadcast to see if I can still bag my free 2 hours - Mixlr usually lets you have one hour free and that's it without a premium account, however ABU seems to have flown under that particular radar and can get away with 2 hours +.

Anyhoo, due to the importance of this event we can proudly present to you a little trailer knocked up to get your tastebuds going in anticipation.
And not only that but a rather dope and phenomenal flyer as well. I came up with the idea of a Star Wars theme and was all going well until I hit the brick wall which was involving some sort of b-boy character.
There was only one choice of who to involve and that was the masterful LG of Digging 4 Victory/Style Warrior. LG provided us with the amazing character design you can see here and quite frankly if this doesn't get snapped up and made into this year's top-selling Xmas toy then there is no justice in the world.

Keep your ears open and I'll let you know the outcome of when/how to hear Podcast #65.
If you are 'following' ABU on Mixlr then you may get a notification that we are performing a test broadcast soon. Don't get excited as it will be just that. I may not even run any audio either.

Take it easy,
Cakemaster Repo

ABU October Podcast - Mouth Breathers Mixtape

Well folks, here is the latest and oh, so greatest, ABU Podcast.
However I must quickly say that ABU is only one-third of this fantastic 2-hour special.
Together with Digging 4 Victory and Disco Scratch this podcast is an homage to Stranger Things with stacks of hip-hop, synth-based soundscapes and all manner of audio delights. All mixed up and served to you in a solid style you just won't hear anywhere else.
Even if you haven't seen this drama series from Netflix you will still enjoy this three-pronged mix.

Please listen and share. It's been getting hot reactions all over the place!

ABU Podcast October Super Special

Ladies and gentlemen.....

This Thursday is the ABU Podcast Thursday. I am being welcomed by my fellow music men - LG from Digging 4 Victory and Waxer from Disco Scratch - as we do our second collaboration this year.

Now, over the summer all three of us were enthralled by an 8-part supernatural drama series on Netflix called, Stranger Things. In brief, it is set in 1983 and focusses on a little rural town in Indiana in the USA and a bunch of childhood friends of which one of whom goes missing.
Imagine a spooky tv series directed by Steven Spielberg and John Carpenter back in the early 1980s featuring a great period synth-laden soundtrack and you're halway there.

With Halloween on the horizon we decided to get together and produce a 2-hour mixtape with each of us concentrating on a specific part of the series of no more than 40-minutes long.

Make sure you tune in to hear the results this coming Thursday (27th) from 9pm on http://discoscratch.co.uk/radio. Groundbreaking stuff.

If Stranger Things has largely passed you by then check out the trailer below and see what you think.

Disco Scratch - Digging 4 Victory

As with my previous post about new stuff going on at Disco Scratch this is a little piece about LG's fantastic Digging 4 Victory project which incorporates a podcast once a month (initially via DSR).

The ideology of Digging 4 Victory (explained here) is simple - to re-use music, to give new life to discarded vinyl and place it in a new context or even just a new owner. Participants are encouraged to go 'digging' in record shops, charity shops, car boots, recycling centres....anywhere where you might find old records and produce a compilation or 'mixtape' which their new-found treasure.
These results will then be the basis of the D4V Podcast.

Have a look at LG's previous Podcasts (here's Show #2 for example) and you'll see a wonderful visual example of what a typical playlist is like. Having said that, each show's playlist is not made in stone as by the very nature of digging you never know quite what you'll unearth. However you should expect to hear funk, jazz and hip hop.
The topics of the different sources of finding music ranges from 'Digging In The Pockets' (paid-for stuff), 'Digging In The Crates' (songs inspired by watching Red Bull Academy videos), 'Cheap As Chips' (Discogs finds) as well as internet-searching ('Digging Through The Net').

So far the Podcasts have been the fruits of LG's own searching so anyone else wanting to get involve is certainly more than welcome.

Get involved!
