End Of Year ABU! Show - TONIGHT

It's the last Thursday of the month - nay, the year - today so you know where your butt should be at 9pm, don't you?!!

Loads of good beats tonight (K-Solo, Biz, Jonzun Crew and MC Duke amongst many others) with just a hint of festive flavour and a quick look back at what's good with the Disco Scratch / ABU! review of 2011.

Hope to see you all in the chatroom!

Sure Shot Productions No Half-Steppin Xmas Jam

Last Saturday was the Sure Shot Productions No Half-Steppin Xmas Jam and as expected was a truly great experience.
DJ's on the night were residents Just-1 and Chrome with Waxer and myself, Repo guesting behind the wheels of steel.
In front of the decks were some absolutely blinding acts. Billed as 'Special Guests' was SUSPEKT who tore up the place.
Following fresh on their heels was a performance from WHIRLWIND D of SOLID N' MIND with WAXER providing scratch duties. Bearing in mind that this was only his second live performance in 20 years then this was even more breathtaking.
Norwich's own CHROME & ILL INSPIRED took to the stage next and proceeded to wreck shop. These two have their routines down and it really shows. Chrome's funky rhymes are matched only by the lyrical dexterity of Bill's fantastic, jaw-dropping lyrics.

DJ JUST-1 got on the wheels straight away and
Next on was the welcome return of KILLA INSTINCT who pushed the envelope even further with MC BANDOG giving it everything he had even though he was suffering from a previous leg injury. Unfortunately K.I. don't perform in the UK as much as we'd all like so watching them here was a bit of an early Christmas present.

It was my turn to rock the jingle bells so I got busy throwing on the black plastic but as time was precious it turned into a 3-man merry-go-round with Chrome and Waxer joining me.

What a night. It's hard to say what exactly was the best moment for me but some highlights include:

Going to the Graffiti Crimbo Jam prior to the evening jam and seeing KILO's absolutely dope piece (below).

Meeting a load of friends I hadn't seen since the 3 The Hard Way Xmas Jam last year in Birmingham.

Showing Auntie Repo to the ABU! Massive.

Waxer's impromptu demonstration of smashing Bring Forth The Guillotine to pieces during his set!

So much respect for Chrome and Just-1 for getting this all together. Remember this is every month although no live acts, but special guest dj's.
And also catch Just-1's Hip Hop Sessions every Tuesday on Future Radio at 10pm.

And also a big hello to anyone who is visiting the blog for the first time after picking up one of the little ABU! cards that were left around the pub on Saturday ;o)

Looking For The Perfect Beat - A Hip Hop History Doc

Old-timers will already have seen this when I first posted it last year.
It's an audio documentary broadcast on BBC Radio 1 in 1990.
The link was originally on the rather effeminate Rapidshare service which expired in seconds, more or less.

Check the post as I've updated the link.

Disco Scratch ABU! Takeover DOWNLOAD - November 2011

In the house...
It was another roadblock in the Disco Scratch chatroom last night with some new faces joining the usual suspects which was really good to see.
The banter was as good as could be expected with everyone on their best behaviour as not to frighten any newbies away.
Or not.

Some particular 'highlights' of chat include.....

" i over heard my neighbour tell some one when she had her kid she split from her fanny to her arse... her words" (Jim_Cee)

"The popemobile is very environmentally friendly... it runs on the tears of abused alter boys" (Wax_At_The_DOV)

"all this intellectual conversation, bromance and general bumming" (InchHigh)

"it's all in Thora, I've got no more" (Jim_Cee)

"Yeah this MOvember thing, I only heard about it on Saturday... so I started to let my bollock hair grow if anyone's interested (normally I'm a shaver raver)" (Wax_At_The_DOV)

Two hours of smokin' hot tracks with Serial Killa and Black Nostaljack getting a particular favourable thumbs-up. And when the main show had ended, my man Waxer jumped on to give us more of what we need and slammed on some rarely-heard early productions and demos from the House of Wax.

Remember, it always pays to listen live for the extra bits at the end which are strictly NOT included on the download. You fassyholes.

Future Radio ABU! Takeover - Taking Over Your Radio AGAIN!

ABU! is back and live on the wheels of steel tonight on DJ Just-1's Hip Hop Sessions show on Future Radio.
Tune in at 10pm for 2 hours of solid old school hip and breaks as I've been graciously allowed to return to the studio to perform yet more dodgy mixing and for the masses.

And of course a big shout to everyone who made it to the last No Half-Steppin night on Saturday with Just-1, Chrome spinning and special guest DJ JU-E from the FGM Crew who dropped some Random Rap and executed some ill scratches on top.
Next month's event is the Xmas Special and is set to blow to roof off with special guest PA's as well as yours truly guesting on the wheels. More news on this very soon.

Disco Scratch Needs Your Help

For all of us religiously following the weekly Disco Scratch Radio show, you'll know that things haven't been rolling smoothly since the summer. The following is an open letter from the head honcho, Waxer........

Dear all Ageing B Boys & Fly Girls... an open letter to you. The POV was silenced 6 weeks ago and working an 80 hour week at the moment is kinda hard to fit anything else in... also recently had to sell all my gear so nothing to broadcast on... HOWEVER... I would dearly love to get back on air and I'm just asking something of you all... If I asked you lot to blindly donate some money to the Disco ...Scratch cause until I got to £170 which is what I need to pay for stuff to get broadcasting again, would you consider making the donation?

Every person who donates will get a bundle of niceness in the post and when I'm back on my feet a little bit, the freeness will continue with a second bundle out to fans of Ageing B Boys Unite! and Disco Scratch... not forgetting the monthly Heroes of UK Hip Hop takeover shows I'll be starting up again... this post is just a discussion, so if you feel I'm taking the proverbial, please let me know, it's just a tester...

It'll just be a paypal thing until I get to the amount I need, I've got the rest of the money I need but I'm a bit short and can't justify the expense when I've got so many other outgoings... You will all be truly rewarded if you contribute and when I do the first Disco Scratch Records release (hopefully next year) you will be mentioned as a contributor in the sleeve notes...

I'm in this for the long haul, just had a little glitch at the moment, so please post your response below, if I get enough positive responses, I'll do it... I'll let it run a few days and see what you guys think. Disco Scratch is 3 years old this Christmas, let's see if we can roll FOREVER! Here's the Christmas show first podcast from 2008:

This one featured the missus, just playing some breaks & beats to the breaks, you know the steez... Bigup all family and let's see if we can bond together to make this work, I PROMISE YOU, YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED! Respect to all crew...

Any more information I get I will of course pass on to you fine folks. I think it goes without saying that our Thursdays have been that little bit darker recently - and that's not including the Daylight Saving shizzleness.

R.I.P. Heavy D

Rap legend, Heavy D aka Dwight Arrington Myers - as I'm sure you must know now - passed away yesterday (8th November 2011).
It seems almost pointless posting about something that you already are aware of because what else can I add?
I just feel I should acknowledge the passing of one of the true heavyweights (no pun intended) in our culture in some way.
He was one of the good guys and liked by everyone. He was one of the heavy-hitters (again, no pun intended) of the industry responsible for mentoring Sean 'Puffy' Combs, he was also behind the early career of Mary J Blige and was the cousin of Pete Rock, too.

It doesn't seem right. Well, it doesn't seem right when ANYONE goes, right? But in Hev's case it really was too early, he was only 44 years old and was still working hard in the industry.

Bizarrely, a friend of mine sent me a link to his latest blog entry which contained this video below earlier in the day. I didn't actually read the title. Well, I did, but it didn't register - 'Heavy D – His Final Interview…'. Obviously, viewing it after I had heard the news made watching it even more painful and poignant.
Westwood - who I seem to be coming round to more and more after all these years of being another 'hater' - is in fine form and chats happily to Heavy D about the birth of hip hop, the tragic passing of Troy, working with Jay-Z, producing, touring the UK, Teddy Riley and Pete Rock.

RIP Heavy D

Respex due...Irish Craig

Graffiti Writers Wanted!

My man, LG is currently on the lookout for writers for an upcoming project.
I'll let him takeover...

"I used to publish a graffiti fanzine nearly 20 years ago called ‘Art of Servival’, and now I am planning to resurrect it.
I’m looking for graffiti writers young and old or even retired to contribute to this project. The difference with this fanzine is that it will be text only… no photo’s.
I want to hear any funny / interesting stories that you may have from your time as a writer. You can write as little or as much as you like, you really have a total free reign.
I’ve put the feelers out and have some positive feedback, with a promising list of writers keen to get involved… some you may never heard of, others you would definitely have.
You can read more details here, please get in touch if you want to get involved."

You know how dope his designs are already so expect the re-dux fanzine to be just as well-produced.
I , for one, would love to read about stories of writers' escapades from the train yards and crazy cops all from back in the days. So get in touch with him if you have a story or two.
LG is hoping to get the first issue done by the end of 2011and aiming to make it 52 pages, A5 and printed in Black and White photocopy format. Old school ;-)

And hopefully the 'zine will be a *little* bit cheaper than a certain other premium graff mag out there at the moment (cough, Gr*ph*tizm, cough).

UK Fresh 86 Facebook Group

There's a nice group on Facebook dedicated to the legendary event UK Fresh 86. It's not new and has in fact been going for quite a while but as of late is enjoying a real boost thanks to some never-seen-before photos taken by a couple of members.

Were you there? Did you sneak a camera into the event? Or perhaps you just want to re-live some of the moments from the show. Or just see what all the fuss is about.
Check out the group here:

Respect to 'Godstone McGuires'.

What We're Gonna Do Right Here Is Go Back - #1 Grange Hill Honeys

I've been watching the whole of the legendary BBC1 kids drama, Grange Hill since the early part of this year. But more importantly my daughter has become a confirmed fan and relishes each episode.
We've just finished series 9 which - as many agree - is regarded as the Golden Age of GH.
Yes, the school fire, asbestos, fibre-glass attacks, Imelda and her Terrahawks gang, Ant Jones' singling-out by Mr Bronson, Miss Partridge the single mother (shock, horror), Fay and Mr King's exra-curricular liasons, the return of the school magazine, the Speaking Wall, Danny Kendal, Gonch & Hollo, new boy Ziggy Greaves, Gonch's Toast Bar, and course this series was the one that followed Zammo's downward spiral as he fell victim to a heroin addiction and subsequently found by Ro-land in the video arcade back room.

Ahhhh. Them were the days.
My daughters' eyes are constantly out on stalks whenever the scene is set in the school canteen as back in those days schoolkids could quite happily munch on crisps, Mars Bars and sip on Coke without being told to 'eat more healthily'. There was even salt, pepper, vinegar and a bottle of Heinz on them dinner tables!

For me though I must've stopped watching Grange Hill by about the 12th series in 1989. I know that later on it all went a bit poncey and I can recall that one teacher walked around the halls with some sort of early version of an iPad - this would've been in the early 2000's. The show always seemed to be banging on about softer subjects and the importance of being eco-friendly and 'green'. Never again would the 'Hill feature as hard-hitting a subject as drug abuse ever again.

Tell 'em about the honey, mummy.
Now, while I've been watching Series 12 I've noticed that there have been quite a lot of easy-on-the-eye ladies moreso than in earlier episodes. I remember harbouring a secret crush on Julia Glover (her dad was a busybody PTA member) as well as Georgina Hayes who was the love-interest of new-boy Ant 'Quiff/Mullet' Jones.
Of course I fancied Zammo's squeeze, Jackie Wright - who didn't? But then there was Caroline 'Calley' Donnington who really blossomed in later years (and subsequently dated film director Michael Winner!). And of course, before this there was Claire Scott who was going out with Stewpot. Who remembers what became of her? She did some modelling I seem to recall....

Watching Grange Hill seems to have been a rite-of-passage to most of us in that late 30's/early 40's stage. I couldn't say if it was as important to teenagers during it's last few years in the 2000's as it was to me when I was originally watching Series 9 aged 15. Probably not.

Anyhoo, I found a batch of pictures of some of the cast of GH at some reunion recently and thought I'd do a 'then and now' of some of the laydeez.
So below I present some of the Grange Hill Honeyz. Can you remember them all?
I didn't include Georgina as I couldn't locate a current pic of her, sadly.
And Imelda....? Hells yeah!

Jorun Bombay & Marley Marl - "The Symphony" (THE JORUN BOMBAY REMIX)

He's only gone and done it again.
Here's another Jorun Bombay remix this time using the acapella of The Symphony (where did he get that??!!) and taking it even further.
This bloke is seriously picking up Marley Marl's crown as far as I'm concerned.

Listen to this. Can I get a soul-braaap?

You need to hear more from Jorun.

And of course, PETER PIPER REMIX which is a stone-cold classic reworking.

Halloween Show Download

A big thanks to everyone who tuned in live on Thursday to hear the show live. A big shout to those listening outside of the chatroom and an even bigger shout to the man who makes all this possible, Lord Waxer, he is the Master,  the big beat-blaster, the Hob-Nob dunkin', scratchin' to the funkin', homeslice. If you could see the behind-the-scenes shizzle that goes on to bring you the noize each month you wouldn't then even believe it.
The show was being transmitted from a lonely BT exchange in deepest, darkest Kent on a cold, dark night with only the ghost of Norman (one year this month RIP) for company. Old Norm was quite well-behaved bearing in mind that he could've easily gone all out on the trick or treat biznizz. However he only decided to mess with the Disco Scratch Player which was easily combated ('press pause, then play again').

Lots of new people in the chat including a legendary and pioneering ex-writer from Guildford, BANZAI (SSB).

Lots of Halloween, spooky tracks with eerie tv themes from the 1970's - they were a great time for kids shows, weren't they?
If you missed out or want to grab one for your collection, the mp3 is available for download now.

Tracklisting in the Comments.

Disco Scratch ABU! Halloween Takeover - Taking Over Your Radio Pt2

And it continues....
ABU! is on the airwave hijack next week. As you know, your Tuesday evening is already booked as you'll be locked into The Hip Hop Sessions from 10pm. But being that next Thursday is the last Thursday of the month that means only one thing. Yes, it's the Takeover Show on the mighty Disco... (Disco....Disco...) Scratch.... (Scatch...Scratch...).

And have we got a show for you! I've gone all out on this one to give you maximum thrills and extreme chills with freaky cuts that you won't have heard for yonks.
Listen closely and you shall also hear again some stuff that you might have heard as an impressionable nipper. But we're not talking happy, dreamy music but long-lost, banished to the back of the noggin, eerie tv themes and the like.

So, in short, get over to Disco Scratch Radio on Thursday 27th October for 9pm. Darken the room, light a candle and stand in front of a mirror and say 'Candyman' five times.

This is going to be the most alarming, terrifying, petrifying, hair-raising, spine-chilling, blood-curdling, bone-chilling, horrifying, nerve-racking, fearsome, unnerving, creepy and spine-tingling Halloween yet.

Future Radio ABU! Takeover - Taking Over Your Radio Pt1

ABU! is transmitting live next Tuesday from the Future Radio studios.

Witness the fitness as I gets busy on the 1's and 2's in the guest dj spot from 11pm.
If you're a regular to The Hip Hop Sessions on a Tuesday (and if not, why not!) then you'll know the deal. DJ Just 1 is live from 10pm playing new and old whilst Mr Eps gets to shine in the second hour.

However ABU! are in the house, bumrushing the show and cold stomping 'em as REPO flexes and vexes with the classic vinyl assortment for an hour live late in the mix.

If you live in the Norwich area tune in on your radio to 107.8FM. If you're outside then you can still listen by going to the station's website at
But do not listen on laptop speakers because it's a crime. Hook ya shitz up to ya boomin' system or plug in your £2000 Dr Dre headphones.

Mark B's Old School Hip Hop Tribute Single News

"JDL the place we dwell, Easy A.D
Thru the gates of hell
The Gods who fell to earth then made heaven
Legacy of legends NY seventy-seven. "

Some news straight from Mark B now. His latest production is a tribute to the Cold Crush as you may have guessed by the above graphic.

In partnership with DIALECT, the single  'FRESH, WILD, FLY & BOLD (Cold Crush: It's a Must)' has just been released this Monday.
Available on 45, too.
Available on limited edition 7" vinyl on Pritt Kalsi's legendary King of the Beats Records and also as a digital download on iTunes, Amazon, Nokia and Bandcamp.

I had a listen on Bandcamp and sounds nice and fresh with cuts by my homie, Jazz T.There's a great flute sample running through the track which bounces off a dirty-sounding gritty Clavinet. Top drawer stuff.

More Ideas From Style Warrior

Seems like LG is getting his mojo on recently with a great number of ideas straight outta the Style Warrior think-tank.

Groove Records, Mike Allen and a new Hijack design. And that's just this week!
Cop a load of these and if you would like to perhaps buy one in the not-to-distant future then please click on the links below which take you to a very short - and I mean very short - questionnaire. This is just a survey to gauge interest - it is not a commitment to buy.

What do you think? Pretty abso-bloody-lutely firing, would you agree?

Here are the links to the surveys.
Remember, if you don't vote for them,  then these designs may just continue the rest of their existence as jpegs* on a Mac. If you want to see them on a t-shirt then demand it, godammit!

The ABU! Plastic Attack Show / Bonus Disco Scratch Show

Last Friday was a bit of an internet radio-fest to say the least.

From 9pm was DJ Laz-e's Plastic Attack show featuring yours truly and my own musical selections for an hour.
If you're not aware, there is the option to use the 'chat facility' on the Plastic Attack Facebook group page whilst this show transmits every Friday evening. Go to the page and select 'Chat To Group' - obviously you need to be a member of the group in order to do this.

Unfortunately time flew by and out of my 15 track choices only 10 got aired.

DJ Laz-e - Live on RTE Digital Radio
01  Steinski - Lesson 3 [History of Hip Hop]
02  Hassan & 7-11 - Cold Rock Stuff
03  BDP - T'Cha - T'Cha
04  Ice T - Reckless
05  Kid Frost - Terminator
06  Davy DMX - The Dmx Will Rock
07  Hijack - Intro, Phantom of the Opera
08  Gang Starr - Jazz Thing(Video Mix)
09  Mixmaster Gee And The Turntable Orchestra - Manipulator
10  Jazzy Jeff & Fresh Prince -  Rhythm Trax - House Party Style

It was an entertaining time; me holding a phone to my ear for an hour; Laz-e sweating profusely and hitting switches as he was performing a one-man show on Friday.

Waxer on Friday evening -
actor used to employ likeness.
Now during the latter part of the show, Mr Waxer showed up. He then decided to keep the party going by doing a very impromptu Disco Scratch bonus show live on the air not long after the Plastic Attack had finished.
It was a very special evening as anyone who was listening will attest. You can catch the show in it's entirety as I managed to record the whole show.
Drink was flowing and everything was played off 100% vinyl. Hopefully the atmosphere can be recreated by just adding a spirit of your choice to your favourite glass as you press 'play'.

Dump Koch!

Anyone who's a fan of early 80's hip hop movies should find pics these exceptionally brilliant.
Designed by LG of Style Warrior, you may remember his great Beat Street designs from a previous post.
No word on how these are to be used (tees? posters?) but you have to agree that they are iconic and capture the essence of Style Wars, no?

I Can't Live Without My Radio....da-na-naaa

Internet radio. Do you listen to it?

Go on iTunes and fire up the 'Radio'. Just look at how many stations there are out there. It's daunting, isn't it? Click on Hip Hop/Rap and there are 299 channels available from ABC Rap to ZET Rock & Rap.
However if you aren't a fan of iTunes and just prefer to go straight to the source and listen to the music then read on.
There are some stations that I listen to on the reggy-reg. If you have any recommendations then post them up in the comments.

Future Radio

Tuesdays - 10pm-12am - The Hip Hop Sessions with DJ Just-1 - Future Radio

Norwich's own Just-1 controls the wheels of steel for the first hour which can sometimes be newer hip hop while Mr Eps is on for the final 11-12 shift playing the classics.
Future Radio is a community radio station broadcasting in the west of Norwich in Norfolk. You can however listen over the internet from the homepage.

Future Radio
Facebook Group

RTÉ Radio

Fridays - 9pm-10pm - The Plastic Attack with DJ Laz-E

Live from Dublin is Ireland's own DJ Laz-E who plays classic hip hop with guest hosts Raggaman Bob and DJ Cool C on rotation.
Expect some back-in-the-day rock breaks as well.

Broadcasting digitally on RTÉ 2XM and also over the internet, thankfully. If you visit the Plastic Attack Facebook page then you can get involved in the chatroom on a Friday.
The show is usually available for download shortly after the live broadcast.

Disco Scratch Radio

Thursdays - 9pm-11pm (sometimes longer...) - The Disco Scratch Show with Waxer

You should all know by now the scoop on this one.
A weekly 2-hour show hosted by Waxer on his own Disco Scratch website with affiliations with Freestyle FM and Sensei FM.
The first and third week of the month are a mish-mash of old and new hip hop. The second week is the Heroes Of UK Hip Hop Takeover show with an emphasis, UK hip hop. The last Thursday of each month is yours truly, the Ageing B-Boys Unite! Takeover Show providing the beats and basslines.
The chatroom is really where the magic is though and you can sign into it whilst listening.
All shows are archived and are available for download shortly after the live broadcast.

The 29th September sees the last regular show on DSR for a short while whilst Waxer relocates and gets things settled then hopefully it'll be back to business mid-November.

They're Back! Disco Scratch Mugs! / DS Radio News

In case, like me, you missed out on the original batch of official Disco Scratch mugs earlier in the year then you better not sleep on this.
Back again in a limited quantity of 10, yes 10 only. And they may well be the last ones.

To paraphrase Mr Morgan Khan, is it going to be you that gets one - or some wally poser that moved faster?!?

Move your butts and get clicking to THIS LINK NOW.

And on a sad note, this may be the last month of regular Disco Scratch Radio shows.
Lord Waxer of Freshhiphopshire is taking the show on a hiatus due to real life commitments and won't be able to commit to a weekly spot for the forseeable future.
Therefore the final shows will be as follows:

15th Sept - Regular show - Waxer getting busy on the wheels of steel taking requests and schoolin' suckers.
22nd Sept - No show
29th Sept - ABU Takeover Show

As for the meantime I will still be continuing with the Takeover Shows although as I won't be actually taking over anything in particular then they will revert back to the ABU Monthly Podcasts.
I'm looking into maybe streaming the show live once a month then putting them up for download afterwards. Maybe. It'd be nice, but no promises.
