ABU Takeover Show PODCAST June 2014 #42

I want to say a real heartfelt thanks to everyone that tuned in to the show last night and enjoyed it. It was a massive departure from the usual ABU shows and I wondered if I was doing the right thing by playing such a different range of genres. It seemed to go down well so I'm very thankful.
Maybe a Part II next year perhaps....

Excellent show sir. As you mention at the start it's good to put the old school stuff on the back burner now and again, particularly since most of your listeners already have the bulk of the hip hop tracks that you play! Plus, 80s hip hop doesn't generally make me feel nostalgic because I never stopped playing it, but some of this stuff I haven't heard since it was released. (In fact the Nik Kershaw track reminded me so much of my school years that I felt old and depressed after hearing it, so thanks for that).

Speaking of school years, I don't think I've ever heard the Grange Hill theme without seeing the opening credits. Listening to it as a stand-alone track made me realise for the first time how badly suited it is as the theme tune to an inner-city school drama. It's more suited to Mr Noseybonk.

Also of note are the Morricone track (one of my favourite soundtrack composers) and that blistering Chubby Checker track which broke into my ears and smashed up all my ear furniture.

Excellent stuff Ben, definitely up for another reflections show.

Your pal,

Lil' Rockin' Ramses

Ahh, I do look forward to the Ramses Review!

Yes, it was a new angle last month, thought I'd give the usual stuff a rest. We're all adults now and the ABU show isn't about playing the 'coolest' and 'freshest' music so there's no worry of being beaten up in the playground after listening the next day and confessing that you actually liked a non-hip hop track.

Yes, the GH title theme is really a nice piece of library funkiness when you listen out of context. I have been listening to The Grange Hill Album lately which is basically a load of 80's songs on a double-cd with the GH theme at the beginning!
And to think this same theme tune was used briefly for Give Us A Clue - which Grange Hill was on the other channel. Bizarre!

Very true words that about the fact that because we never *stopped* listening to stuff then it can never feel as nostalgic as maybe someone who has rediscovered electro.

Glad the Morricone found such receptive ears. I have to confess that I have not seen the film and instead it was brought to my attention via its use on a Rob Brydon BBC comedy some years back.

ABU - making you feel old and depressed since 2007!

Oh yeah.
The Grange Hill theme was originally titled Chicken Man, as was on a Themes International library LP titled Rock Comedy (TIM 1017).
It has an arse on the cover !

Very interesting selection Reepz.
Loving the Dead Kennedys in there, one of the illest bands of all time in my opinion.
I can never be a bad thing to be as open minded to music as possible.
I dig.
Keep on keeping on homes.
Peace.

(apologies Ric, your original comment was inadvertently deleted).

Yes Ric, I'm not a massive punk fan by any means but energy and ethos behind the DK's is one I've always admired from the intelligent thought-provoking lyrics to the cut 'n' paste, do-it-yourself, homemade inlay sheets of their albums.

And thanks for that album info. I knew it was never intended as the Grange Hill theme but hadn't even researched where Chicken Man originated. Thanks buddy!
